Southern Cross "Nine" Tourer 1932

8.9 h.p. 1018cc 4 cylinder overhead inlet & side exhaust valve engine with 4 speed gearbox.

This was the first of a long line of Southern Cross 4 Seater Tourer models, all looking very similar, before they were replaced by the all new 2 Seater Gloria Southern Crosses. It was also the first, along with the Super Nines, to use the Coventry Climax designed overhead inlet & side exhaust valve engine.

This model is recognisable from later Southern Crosses by it’s wings with no sweeping trailing ends and it’s mesh radiator grille mounted in front of the Art-Deco fluted surround.

As this model used the same chassis as the Super Nines, we do not know how many were produced. We have recorded 23, of which 6 survive with their original style bodywork. Also offered was a 6 cylinder 1023cc side valve model. We have recorded 1, but it no longer survives.

2 body styles were offered :-

4 Seater Tourer – £225

6 Cylinder Tourer – £235

Southern Cross Sports 1932 to 1933

9.8 h.p./ 1122cc 4 cylinder overhead inlet & side exhaust valve engine with 4 speed gearbox.

Very similar to the previous model but with a larger capacity engine, “swept” wings and redesigned chassis.

We estimate that 200 were produced and have recorded 55 with 9 surviving with their original bodywork

1 body style was available :-

$ Seater Sports – £225

Southern Cross Speed 4 Seater 1933 to 1934

9.53 h.p. 1087cc 4 cylinder overhead inlet & side exhaust valve engine with 4 speed gearbox.

Very similar gain to it’s proceeding model, but this time with a smaller capacity engine, and the option of a free-wheel pre-selector gearbox. it is very difficult to distinguish from the previous model, but if studied carefully, the wing lights now have a deeper streamlined bodies.

We estimate that together with the Southern Cross Sports Saloon, 800 were produced. We have recorded 36 with 6 surviving with their original style bodywork.

1 model was available :-

4 Seater – £215

Southern Cross Sports Saloon 1933 to 1934

9.53 h.p. 1087cc 4 cylinder engine overhead inlet & side exhaust valve engine with 4 speed gearbox.

This model is mechanically the same as the Speed Model 4 seater Tourer, but with 2 door coupe bodywork. It did not appear to have sold well, which may have been partly due to being offered alongside Triumph’s new Gloria range.

We have recorded 63 with 5 surviving, of which, 1 retains it’s original bodywork.

1 model available :-

Sports Saloon – £225
